Believing is Seeing

TheUniverseYesterday I listened to a podcast interview of Dr. Jean Houston, who is regarded as one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement.  During the interview, one sentence really struck me in the gut. It was this:

You live in the Universe. The Universe lives in you.

Imagine the ramifications of that statement. It means that we can co-create with the Universe. What we imagine and perceive from our unique perspective is translated by the Universe into form. That is incredibly empowering!

But it was the next thing that Dr. Houston said that rocked my world:

If you change the way you view the Universe, the Universe itself spontaneously reflects that change back to you. The Universe is not separate from your perception.

What that means, friends, is that what you perceive will be directly reflected back to you. If you don’t like what you perceive in your life — it is up to you to change your perception.  Just sit with those two sentences for a moment and see if they don’t resonate with truth. They certainly did for me.

Let’s take this a step further. If you look at your life as it exists today and see things that do not make you happy, can you change your perception about them? The answer is yes, if you believe you can make that change. If you don’t believe you can, then you can’t. Which brings up another question, one that can lead to deliberate creation.

Aren’t your beliefs just part of your perception?

What are beliefs? A collection of thoughts bundled around a theme. Your beliefs are formed from your experiences, so that when you encounter a similar situation, you will recognize it and have a touch point to interpret it. Every time something triggers that belief, you mind trots it out to filter your present reality. And guess what – you see what you believe.

That is why people perceive the same event differently. Their beliefs form a filter that shifts out the non-corroborating data that does not support the belief. The belief filter allows the supporting bits of data to come through and the underlying belief is “proven” once again.

If you believe that money is hard to come by, it will be. If you believe that you are “no good at love,” you won’t be. If you believe that you are miserable in your job, you will be, because your perception will only see the people and things that support that belief. See how this works?

Look at the areas of your life where you are less than happy. List those things that you believe are the cause of the problem. Then take a step back and ask yourself, “Is there any other way I can look at this?” See if you can’t create at least 3-5 new, empowering views of that item and notice how you feel as you consider the new possibilities. Continue until you have worked your way through your list.

Now, hold up your two lists and consider how you feel when you focus on the negative and positive. Your beliefs affect your feelings, don’t they? Another interesting insight…

The bottom line is that YOU decide what you believe. You choose how you feel based on your beliefs. And the Universe will reflect your choices back to you. Why not choose happiness over despair; joy over sadness; abundance more than limitation? Whatever you choose, that is what you will see.

When you make that shift and begin to notice how your beliefs impact your perception, which then filters your world, it is life changing! And those shifts in perception – from pain and anger to joy and happiness – are all steps in the Heart Dance!

That shift to empowerment also turns the old adage, “Seeing is believing” right on its head. It should really say, “Believing is seeing.”

Story Alchemy

Have you ever stopped to realize that you can’t see into your own eyes…without looking into something else? Whether it is a photograph that captured you in a moment in time, or looking into a mirror, you can’t see yourself without another physical object or person.

Your physical sight is designed to take outward images and convert them into energetic impulses that your physical brain can interpret. The actual process of how this occurs is well documented. But what does your mind do with the images that your brain collects?

Now that is another question altogether.

Metaphysics distinguishes between the brain and the mind. Your brain is the physical object that sits inside your skull. Your mind has been called “consciousness” and thought. So why does this matter?

Because your brain acts like a recording device. Whatever it sees through the visual process, it collects and records. In one sense, it is mechanical because it will do its job whether you are conscious of it or not (just like your heart continues beating and your blood circulates automatically).Mirror Images

But your mind – that is a different story. Think of your mind as a projector.

What does it project?

The stories and beliefs you have created about yourself and the events, people and circumstances your life.

If you believe that you are not likeable, for example, that belief is projected from your mind as you move throughout your day. The millions of bits of data that is available to you is never seen, because it is filtered by your belief of being unlikable. Therefore, you only see the data that supports that belief.

In a very real sense, you project what you believe and look for evidence that your story or belief is “true.” And you will keep projecting that belief and finding supporting evidence until you change the story and the underlying beliefs.

So how do you ever change your beliefs? Is it even possible?

The answer is Of Course!

Learning how to transform your beliefs and stories is the subject of my latest book, Heart Dancing: A Story Alchemy Adventure. I will provide more information about the book and the launch date in the next few weeks.

Why change your stories and beliefs? Because you were meant to dance with life, not fight it or feel small. The Story Alchemy Process can help transform those negative beliefs from lead to gold, so you move through your day with grace and ease. Instead of your projections being in conflict with your authentic self, they are in harmony. Life is peaceful, meaningful and filled with joy and love.

Isn’t that a better way to live?

The other side benefit is that people naturally change when you change. As you alchemize your limiting beliefs and stories, your relationship with yourself heals. And that is projected outward to your relationship with other people.

The ripple effects are unpredictable and immeasurable!

Reframe. Release. Renew.
